A softer approach to space - flooring that supports calm, safety, and sensitivity.

Why this space matters

Oakfield is a co-educational school supporting pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. For students here, the physical environment plays a vital role in how they feel, move, and learn. In high-traffic circulation zones, the flooring needs to be safe, durable, and sensory-appropriate, with colours and textures chosen with real care and consideration.

This is not just a floor...

It’s where safety and calm take root.

Oakfield SEMH School, Hull Flooring

The brief

As part of a lifecycle maintenance programme managed by the site’s facilities team, Hull Flooring was engaged to carry out a 900sqm flooring refurbishment across circulation spaces at Oakfield School.

The existing finishes needed to be uplifted, subfloors prepared, and new carpet tiles installed — with extra care taken in the selection and design of colours, to avoid any potential sensory triggers or emotional disruption for pupils.

All works were to be completed within the school summer holiday period, with clear timelines agreed well in advance to prevent any risk of term-time disruption.

Making it work

Working closely with the school’s senior leadership team, Hull Flooring supported the product specification process to ensure all colours and finishes met the unique needs of the school’s pupils.

We installed Tarkett Desso carpet tiles throughout the circulation zones, using a latex smoothing compound beneath to prepare the floors for a clean, even finish. With just four weeks to complete the full programme, our team sequenced works carefully and maintained constant communication with the site team to ensure zero delays.
