WHY PROPER PLANNING MATTERS ON EVERY PROJECT

I've watched planning fail in dozens of ways over the years and 9 times out of 10 it’s because the flooring contractor hasn’t been brought in early enough. Early involvement leads to better planning, better prep, and a better finish. When the flooring is treated as an afterthought or one to go in last and planning hasn’t been taken seriously, you turn up on site and find the subfloor isn't dry, access wasn't accounted for, materials arrive on the wrong day, trades clash because no one coordinated timing and suddenly what should have been straightforward becomes chaos.
The strange thing is that most of these failures aren't about surprises, they're about planning being treated like admin - something to tick off before the real work starts. But planning isn't admin, it's the foundation for everything that comes after. What is it they say… Failure to plan is planning to fail!
So that’s why we are meticulous on the planning even when someone else is coordinating trades because flooring relies so heavily on preparation, moisture levels, substrate condition, proper drying time etc. weak planning doesn't just cause delays, it compromises the finish itself and that’s not acceptable for our standards
The most common mistake I see
When the idea that ‘flooring gets fitted in at the end’ overrides the importance of planning. It's the last trade, so people assume it can flex around everything else, but subfloors need proper drying time, access needs planning and prep can't be rushed. The projects that go sideways usually show the same signs: delays, clashes with other trades, subfloors that aren't ready, and the damage is already done by the time flooring arrives.
What happens when planning goes right
The Entertainer in Cambridge is a good example of planning working exactly as it should. Retail fit-outs demand tight sequencing and zero disruption. The stakes are high but because everyone bought into the plan, from access arrangements to stock arrival timings, the project ran seamlessly.
Materials arrived exactly when we needed them subfloor preparation was completed in the right conditions, with proper drying time built in and our team had uninterrupted, well-structured working time, enabling us to finish the project cleanly, on schedule and without the usual last-minute scramble.
What it actually takes
A strong project start rests on a few things:
First - a comprehensive site assessment: moisture readings, level checks, access logistics, all of it.
Second - a realistic programme that builds in time for prep and curing, not around it.
Third - actual coordination with other trades so you're not working blind.
And fourth - upfront clarity with the client about expectations and timescales.
We always try to eliminate unknowns early through testing and phased site visits to remove risk and make the install as calm and predictable as it can be. The team understands and respects the process and communication runs constantly with daily check-ins, progress photos and clear handovers.
The one thing that matters most
Bring your flooring partner in early. Not at the point of ordering, but when the project is still being sequenced. Early involvement leads to better planning, better prep, and a better finish.
Good planning makes projects flow and that ensures your space is delivered on budget, and open for business on schedule without delay!
